Rick Dempsey at the ESPN Zone; September 27, 2007

On Thursday afternoon, Rick Dempsey and Jim Hunter joined fans at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore for the final afternoon Q&A/Autograph session of the year.

For the most part, he talked about the state of the team and of the minor leagues.

The event was emceed by Jim Hunter, and most of the questions directed towards him were about the development of the youngsters in the minor leagues.

Both Jim and Rick believe the key in rebuilding the team is not through free agency or high ticket signings, but through developing the minor leagues, finding talent and building a core.

The crowd was fairly small, well smaller than I have seen at the events throughout the year. Although there were not too many questions asked, Rick went deep into detail about the team's issues and what can be done to bring the Orioles back into prominence.

Notes:

  • Noted that the team must be rebuilt around Brian Roberts, and Nick Markakis.
  • Added that Guthrie is been a diamond in the rough, plus the Orioles need to focus on signing Bedard and getting consistency out of the young arms
  • Has the feeling the Orioles have a core of good young pitchers -- but consistency is the key.
  • Says that Daniel Cabrera has an arm of gold, but that means nothing if he can't get the ball where he wants. Feels that he's still learning and at times his fundamentals are off.
  • Feels that is also the case with Radhames Liz, and Francisco Cabrera.
  • A member of the audience brought up MASN (Jim Hunter took the question) and if there's a chance they'd be imgrating to HD (high-definition TV). He said that MASN is working on the service; however, they need to get another channel and there are layers to the issue. As well, MASN must go through negotiations with the cable providers and lawyers. There was not a definitive answer to the question.
  • Dempsey believes the young pitchers are being rushed -- however, only out of necessity as the Orioles has no one else in the pipeline. The brass felt that Liz was the best pitcher at the time to bring up to the major leagues. Feels that Liz and other youngsters have the tools, but they need to learn how to play in the majors.
  • Noted that he's interviewed with the Orioles three times for a managerial position and was turned down. Well, attributed his lack of success due to timing and the situation at that given time.

O's Dethrone the Evil Empire, Beat Yanks in 10, 10-9; The Rundown

What a game! Wow. With a little less than two days officially left in the Orioles season, those who have given up on the team or have already flipped the calendar year to 2008 sure as hell missed an exciting ball game last.

Despite the win-loss record, the Birds have not packed it in as of yet.

The Orioles won last night in 10 innings, 10-9, thanks to some creativity by Melvin Mora. With the bases loaded, he dropped a bunt along the third base side to drive in the winning run.

Since the Birds defeated the Yankees, New York lost the division the title to Boston – the first time in nine years that has not happened.

New York came armed and ready to go, as Alex Rodriguez had four RBIs; however, it was not enough. The Orioles’ Jon Leicester got tagged hard as he gave up seven runs in about four innings of work, but Rob Bell pitched valiantly and kept the team in the game, and Chad Bradford earned the win.

Jay Payton had a huge night with 3 RBIs, and led the rally in the 5th inning which brought the Orioles back.

Baltimore scored 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth off Mariano Rivera to send the game into extra innings.

Orioles Beat Blue Jays, 8-5; The Rundown and More O's Drug Stench...

The Orioles won yesterday against the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-5 as the kids from the farm contributed in a huge way. With the win yesterday, Baltimore avoided the sweep by Toronto.

Jeremy Guthrie came back to pitch and close out the season, which I give him major props for doing so. He was on a pitch count due to his injury; however, he was decent as he went 5 innings and gave up runs (but Jay Payton made some miscues in the field that nearly cost the O’s early).

Luis Hernandez, J.R. House and Jay Payton all homered for the O’s.

Jim Hoey got the win last night.

Sorry, I have training today, so there will not be much in terms of analysis of the team or the game last night.

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game, as the Baltimore Examiner, Orioles Hangout, & Washington Post.

Heathir Irvin of Oriole Magic has a preview of the final series of the year.

Meanwhile, Jamie Walker could see less action in ’08, as will Chad Bradford. Simply put, both men are specialists and they lose their effectiveness if they are over exposed. The duo appeared in way too many games because of the thinning of the pitching staff. It is critical that this changes next season.

Roch Kubatko has his thoughts of last’s night game, along with some stuff that is taking place at the Yard for “Fan Appreciation Weekend”.

Like I have said time and time again, expect big changes this offseason. Dave Trembley has alluded to some of it, but the lack of response or words by Andy MacPhail publicly just says that we all expect a lot to happen in the winter.

As the whole steroid era in sports and the subsequent investigations rear their ugly head, the Baltimore Sun today has a huge article about the Orioles and their link to it. Most fans know the story of Rafael Palmeiro, Jay Gibbons, Jason Grimsley and Davis Segui, and the Sun’s Dan Connolly interviews former and current Oriole players and front office members about the issue.

Personally, I don’t know if there’s a clique of guys on the staff who meet up and chat about drugs; however, I don’t think there is.

I just think that the use of PED’s in sports is a personal thing, done out of the view of the locker room and public eyes. Like I have said before, with the amount of money being offered today in sports, the need to stay employed, and just basic human nature – there will always be a segment of guys who will do what they need to do to get ahead.

Do I agree with PED use and cheating, of course not – however, it is what it is. I am sure that over time, there will be more names unleashed and exposed. Reputations and careers may be ruined, but for right now, after one serves a punishment, they can come back and play.

In some cases, like Jason Giambi, if they are still productive, no one cares and things go back to the way they were.

I don’t think the Orioles condone or illicit a culture of drug use, but it is alarming that key names keep popping up in the whole debate and it is not helping the team’s image.

Zambrano Sucks It Up, Orioles Lose 8-5 to the Jays

It's too bad that the Orioles had to play a nine inning game, because if it was an eight inning game, they would have won hands down.

Too bad reality dictated otherwise.

The Orioles in need of pitching, turned to vagabond hurler Victor Zambrano to save the day and hopefully give the team a quality based on what they have seen from him.

Well, he was nothing short of awful.

They lost the game 8-5, thanks to Zambrano being flat out awful as he gave up eight runs in 2/3 of an inning; however, if you can manage a moral victory, the bullpen kept the Blue Jays off the board for the rest of the game. Victor looked like a human pinata last night, as the Blue Jays batted around and sent 13 men to the plate.

If it were not for an amazing catch by a motivated Jay Payton, things could have been worse - much worse.

The Baltimore offense put in a valiant effort to come back from disaster, as they scored five runs, but there was too big of a hole dug.

The two teams play again on Thursday night, and then the Spankees comes into town. At this point, with a Tampa Bay offense which has picked, the Orioles will need to make something of this weekend, or they will possibly finish in last place in the AL East

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the ugly details from last night, as does Orioles Hangout, Orioles MLB site, Baltimore Examiner, & Washington Post.

Roch Kubatko tells it like it is in his blog, Roch Around the Clock and Bill Ordine has his thoughts from last night.

Corey Patterson is more than likely done for the season -- too bad. He came back strong in the second half and if you would have asked me before July, I would have said send him on his way. However, he's a good guy, and great defensive outfielder, but Tike Redman is doing the job decently and may be a much cheaper alternative than Patterson in the off-season.

Oriole Legend Rick Dempsey at the ESPN Zone From 12-1pm in Downtown Baltimore on Thursday...

Oriole legend Rick Dempsey will be at the ESPN Zone in the Inner Harbor on Thursday, September 27th for a Q&A session and then autographs along with a meet and great thereafter.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

More Info:

Dempsey, who joined MASN’s broadcast team after five years coaching for the Orioles, spent 24 years in the big leagues, winning World Series MVP honors in 1983.

Dempsey will be on hand at ESPN Zone to reminisce about his favorite Orioles moments, recap the 2007 season, and share his thoughts on the future of the hometown team.

The question-and-answer session—the last of the season—will be hosted by Orioles broadcaster Jim Hunter and will be followed by an autograph signing for fans.

Trembley Calling Out His Hurlers, O's Lose to the Jays, 11-4; The Rundown...

As we all well know, the last month and half has been nothing short of horrific as the Orioles have only 67 wins on the season; therefore, they have a good shot to finish worse than they did in 2006.

They’ve only won 9 out of their last 34 games; thus, being in the final week of the season, everyone within the organization and fans are looking towards 2008.

In the Baltimore Sun this morning, manager Dave Trembley said a few words that could change the course of the off-season. Unless you have been under a rock, the thin Oriole pitching has been exploited thanks to key injuries to the staff. Erik Bedard, Kris Benson, Jaret Wright, Adam Loewen, Chris Ray, Danys Baez, and most recently Jeremy Guthrie have spent time on the shelf.

Now, the Oriole manager made this proclamation last night after the loss to the Blue Jays:

“The roll call for next season includes starters Erik Bedard, Jeremy Guthrie and Adam Loewen. Trembley mentioned Burres in a group with relievers Jamie Walker and Chad Bradford.

“Other than that,” he said, “I think its pretty open.” Trembley later included Daniel Cabrera, who has given the team innings but not much more.

“We’re not going to win here or be able to compete here just because somebody gives you innings. They’re going to have to be successful. They’re going to have to go out there and give you a chance to win.

There becomes a point in time where potential goes out the window. It’s results now. Results have to get better,” Trembley said.

“That’s prospect status. And prospect status should be over in your third or fourth year in the big leagues. You should be producing. You should be producing and helping the team to win.”

Notice Trembley did not say Daniel Cabrera’s name initially. I guess some guys here in the organization need a fire lit underneath them as seemingly just because you might have a jersey on, your job is guaranteed.

Take note of last night, or perhaps four nights of the week with this team. It’s simple, the rotation is thin, pitchers cannot hit their spots, and it looks like some guys are just throwing rather than pitching.

The numbers don’t lie, and the game against the Jays speaks for itself. We are no longer losing one run games thanks to a bad bullpen, we are being blown out consistently because our pitchers lack basic command, confidence and are just simply not getting the job done.

Well, I don’t know if Trembley said what he did to rile up the corps, but after his experience being hired as manager of the Orioles, I’d be pissed off to.

So, we may not change a decade of losing over night, but last night the Oriole manager made one thing certain — it looks like the guys on the team, most notably, the pitching staff will be held accountable to a degree as to how they perform on the field.

I, for one am glad to see it, and it’s a good thing for Trembley to have made his thoughts public.
I don’t know if fans are reassured; however, at least he’s trying.

Look forward to my season in review next week, it will not be for the faint of heart and perhaps will enlighten as well upset.

It is what it is.

Oh, by the way, the Baltimore Orioles lost to the Toronto Blue Jays, 11-4 last night. Frank Thomas beat us around, homered; Buress was ineffective, the bullpen once again made people want to put paper bags over their heads - ugh, the humanity.

Four more games.

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game, as does the Baltimore Examiner, Washington Post, Orioles Hangout and the Orioles MLB site.

Danys Baez is out for next year - oh joy and will most likely have surgery. Getting paid for doing nothing and just being horrible, eh? I wish Major League Baseball contracts mirrored what we people get in the real world.

I know Danyz Baez is hurt, but he getting $12 million plus for 2 years of not doing his job properly and sucking is analagous to the CEO of a company having no clue what to do in his job capacity, and then being exposed as a complete alcoholic, but the able to keep his job if he goes to rehab; meanwhile, losing money for the company hand over fist.

I just know, I'd love the paycheck. Danys has been the object of much scorn here, and while it's been unfair and he might have been doing the job to the best of his ability; however, he's been nothing but a disappointment -- an expensive one!

The Good Daniel Shows Up, Markakis Homers: O's Win 3-2...

Well, everyone. We are close to the end of the season, and by this time next Monday, we'll know who is in the playoffs and the Orioles' season will be over and mercifully finished.

Last night, the Orioles kicked off their final homestand with a win against the Kansas City Royals, 3-2. Despite it being a matchup of two-second division teams playing for pride and stats, it was quite a good ball game as Daniel Cabrera was solid against Gil Meche.

Cabrera, finally was consistent for a change, and looked like a top flight starter in the action on Monday as he only allowed in one run in seven innings.

The game was made up in lieu of a rainout in early April; howver, there were only few thousand fans at the Yard last night.

The bullpen once again nearly blew the game, as Mark Grudzielanek homered off Jamie Walker, to tie the game, 2-2; however, the amazing Nick Markakis homered to lead the Birds to victory.

Chad Bradford got the save.

It was good to know that we swept the season series against the Royals - alas, some good news for a change.

As well, I sat with the "Free the Birds 2" contigent during the 2nd and 3rd innings to see what was happening up there last night. Well, the time in upper left fiels was interesting to say in the least, and I'll share my thoughts in an upcoming post.

The Washington Nationals Leave RFK in Grand Style...

For 45 years, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium was home to baseball in Washington D.C., as the Senators played there 1962 to 1971, and then the Nationals from 2005 to 2007.

A relic of a time gone by, the old ballyard hosted its last major league baseball game on Sunday, and it is fitting that the Nationals emerged victorious by beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-3.

Even though Washington baseball has been associated with the hard-luck Senators, the 40,519 fans who flocked to the stadium to see the Nationals, but honor the team that has stolen the hearts of many baseball fans in the region, as well as honor the old Senators who played baseball a generation ago.

On a high note, the Washington Nationals did leave RFK with a winning record at 122-121, and as well drew a little less than two million for the season.

Hope you enjoy the pictures!

O's Get Shut Out by Millwood, 3-0: The Rundown...

Once again, the Orioles have run into a brick wall, and they are shut-out again, thank to the brilliant pitching of Kevin Millwood. He pitched seven scoreless innings as the Rangers beat Baltimore, 3-0.

Since the Clay Buchholz no-hitter, the Orioles have been shut-out three times.

Jon Leicester threw a complete game, as he eight innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. He pitched a quality start; however, the Oriole offense could not muster anything and stranding eight runners did them in.

Nelson Cruz, Gerald Laird and Marlon Byrd each drove in runs for Texas.

The Orioles return home tonight and face Kansas City at home.

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game, as does Oriole Magic, Baltimore Examiner, & Orioles MLB site...

Roch Kubatko has his pick for the most disappointing Orioles, and boy, there are several. He picked Ramon Hernandez, and I would for the most part agree with him. I still think Danys Baez's pitching has been far more detrimental to the team than Ramon has.

Bill Ordine has his thoughts of Oriole-land in his blog; O, by the Way...

It looks like Jeremy Guthrie
will pitch in the final week of the season, which is a good thing, because he's probably the best arm left on the staff.

Nick the Stick Has a Career High 5 RBIs, O's Beat Rangers 11-9; The Rundown

Nick Markakis had a ground-breaking night as he had 5 RBIS and the Orioles won last night by a score of 11-9 in the deep heart of Texas.

In light of the Birds horrific season, Nick Markakis homered last night, for his 21st of the season and leads the team with 108 RBI’s. He’s been dubbed “the Natural” by some in Baltimore media, and he’s more than proved that this season.

Baltimore spent the first half of the game down, but came back thanks to key hits from Markakis, as well Aubrey Huff, Brian Roberts and Freddie Bynum who all had 2 RBI’s each.

Ian Kinsler had a huge game for Texas with his 20th homer and three RBIs, as well Hank Blalock also drove in 2 runs.

Michael Young, Marlon Byrd, Nelson Cruz and David Murphy each drove in a run.

Meanwhile, Radhames Liz, despite his electric stuff has struggled mightily in the majors during his short stay. He only lasted 2 2/3 innings as he gave up six earned runs, and the bullpen thereafter didn’t help the cause as Rocky Cheery gave up 2 additional runs and Chad Bradford gave up a run as well.

However, Jamie Walker came in and got his 6th save of the season.

Jim Hoey came in and pitching and inning of scoreless relief and earned the win.

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game as does the Baltimore Examiner, Orioles Hangout, & the Washington Post.

Roch Kubatko has thoughts about the team in his blog; however, the decision on team MVP is pretty much agreed – Nick Markakis deserves the nod. I would have given it to Bedard hands down, but he’s been injured since the month began.

Orioles Lose Again: Rangers Upend them, 3-2...

Can anything go right for the Baltimore Orioles?

Well, like a broken record, they lost again – this time, to the Rangers, 3-2.

The Orioles nearly came back in the ninth inning; however, the bullpen for Texas was able to keep the game in check. Baltimore helped Texas big time in end as Paul Bako struck out for the second out in the ninth inning and then Melvin Mora got caught stealing to end the game.

The play to end the game has been very indicative of the Orioles’ season.

Miguel Tejada homered to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the second; however Texas took the leasd, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning off a single by Jarrod Saltalamacchia that scored both Sammy Sosa and Nelson Cruz.

Cruz homered in the fourth inning to put the Rangers up, 3-1.

The Orioles added another run in the 9th off a Scott Moore sacrifice fly, but came up short.

***

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game, as the Baltimore Examiner, Orioles Hangout, Washington Post, & Orioles MLB site.

In light of the pathetic year the Orioles are having, Nick Markakis’s profile is being raised in baseball, because of his bat and glove.

It looks like Ramon Hernandez has been benched for two consecutive days, as Trembley thought he was tired. However, I think it may be that Ramon may not have the hustle and seems to be playing some lazy baseball. In the same report, Jeremy Guthrie threw without pain and may be back in the lineup sooner rather than later; alas, Danys Baez is contemplating surgery.

However, Ramon is back in the lineup tonight…

Roch Kubatko has his thoughts of what is going on in Oriole-land, and it’s not good.

The Orioles prospects are ready and primed for sunny Hawaii – hey, it’s not Mexico.

Parting Ways: Barry Bonds Will Not Be a Giant in '08...

This was bound to happen sooner or later.

Barry Bonds is told by the San Francisco Giants that they will not be bringing him back in 2008, per reports in the media and what was said on his Web site Friday.

Here's what was said via his site:

This was what he said via his website:

"This journal will be one of my last entries as a San Francisco Giant. Yesterday, I was told by the Giants that they will not be bringing me back for the 2008 season. During the conversation with Peter Magowan I was told that my play this year far exceeded any expectations the Giants had, but that the organization decided this year would be my last season in San Francisco. Although I am disappointed, I've always said baseball is a business -- and I respect their decision. However, I am saddened and upset that I was not given an earlier opportunity to properly say goodbye to you, my fans, and celebrate with the city throughout the season as I truly believe this was not a last minute decision by the Giants, but one that was made some time ago. I don't have nor do I want any ill feelings towards the organization, I just wish I had known sooner so we had more time to say our goodbyes and celebrate the best 15 years of my life…"

Well, there’s more to the entry, but I am not going to copy any more.

Anyhow, after reading this, these are probably his sincere words and to the core. From my visit to San Francisco for the 2007 All-Star Game, I’ll say that the love the fans have for him out there (perhaps, not a majority) only have reverence and warm feelings about him.

We no doubt know he can be surly, rude, opinionated and a jerk; however, the talent he showed in San Francisco helped to built that organization and also AT&T Park to what is today.

Alas, with most corporate decisions, the news was done in a “matter-of-fact” way, more or less, “thanks for the memories, but you need to clean out your desk – soon”.

Give them credit, at least the upper brass told him of their intentions rather than hearing it via the press or through some blog.

It looks like he’ll try to latch onto a team in 2008 in hopes of getting his 3,00th hit. I’d imagine he’d want to stay on the West Coast, but he’s a DH and because of his sordid dealings with BALCO the last few seasons, it may be hard.

For all it is worth, good luck Barry.

Jamie Walker at the ESPN Zone...

The awesome staff at Formula PR and the ESPN Zone in Baltimore were kind of to send me photos last week of the Jamie Walker event at the restaurant.

He chatted with fans and had his thoughts on his contributions to the Orioles’ revamped bullpen, the extension of skipper Dave Trembley’s contract, and the remainder of the 2007 season.

I was not at the event; however, but hope you enjoy the photos.

From my experiences chatting with Jamie a few times, he's been always a straight-shooter, along with a very funny and affable guy.

O's Win in Extra, 6-3: The Rundown and More...

Hey everyone, hope all is well today wherever you are. I just have been real busy with personal life and dealing with a situation, but all is well.

The Orioles left the intimidating confines of the Bronx after being swept in three straight games; however, in the deep heat of Texas they were able to pull out a win in the late innings, 6-3.

Ok, so the bullpen did make things real, real interesting late; alas, they were able to pull it out.

The Rangers held a 1-0 lead until the ninth inning and then the Orioles scored off a Miguel Tejada single.

Baltimore trashed Texas in the tenth inning thanks to Brad Wilkerson error, a Melvin Mora RBI, and a three run homer by Nick 'the Stick" Markakis. They scored five runs in the ninth inning and the bullpen gave up two runs off RBIs by Hank Blalock and Marlon Byrd, but Francisco Cabrera was able to close out the game.

With a little more than a week remaining in the season, can the Orioles reach 70 wins? We've got a continuation of the series with the Rangers, then the Royals come in for a game, then we have the Jays and Yankees.

Then, the season is over. Wow.

What a ride it has been.

Next week, I'll have my divisional series preview, along with a general review of the Orioles season.

***

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game from last night as well as the Orioles MLB site, Washington Post, Orioles Hangout, and Baltimore Examiner.

Jay Payton has been suspended for 2 games, thanks to his tirades in New York. As much I know that he's frustrated in Baltimore and the losing, you cannot ever stand up an umpire no matter how you feel the need to. Roch Kubatko has more about the situation in his blog, Roch Around the Clock...

Meanwhile, Corey Patterson is hurt, but there's good news -- his MRI came back negative on his ankle.

Oh boy, Nestor Aparicio is planning ANOTHER PROTEST, this time on Monday against the Kansas City Royals; however, fans will stay in park and not walk out.

***

As we know, Miguel Tejada came to the Baltimore Orioles 4 years ago to be the centerpiece of the franchise. Well, for the most part, he's kept up his end of the bargain at the plate; however, in the field, it might be a different story.

Well, obviously the off-season for the Orioles will be interesting and much of the conversation will center around Tejada and whether he stays goes. This much is certain in my opinion, Miguel either has to accept a move to first or third and perhaps work on his conditioning, but this what I see -- he's not motivated, and as a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve, he's not happy with the team's situation.

I feel if the Orioles are going to rebuild with young talent -- trade him and get what you can. I love Miggy, his passion for the game, and his skill, but for the good of the team and organization, there's no point spending $12 million if you're going to a be second division team one player. We blew a golden chance last year with the Angels, and from the looks of it, the trade could have helped Baltimore tremendously.

If Tejada is going to part of the team - get the support around him, a power bat or two.

Personally, I'd rather go the former route, but Baltimore needs a tangible plan and goal for next season and beyond.

The Orioles Whipped 12-0; The Rundown

In late August, Mike Mussina was on the verge of perhaps losing his spot in the Yankee rotation and perhaps into early retirement.

The rumors were greatly exaggerated.

He pitched seven innings, struck out six and walked one, as Yankees just trashed the Orioles, 12-0, at Yankee Stadium.

Once again, the rotation looked woeful, and after his strong start last week, Jon Leicester got lit up. He last only four innings and gave up six runs, all earned.
Thereafter, the bullpen could not stop the bleeding. Rocky Cherry came in and pitched two innings, and gave up an earned run; however, Francisco Cabrera came in, pitched a third of inning & was torched for four runs.

In the end, the Oriole offense was futile, and the Yankees came away with an easy win.

The Evil Empire has won 11 out of 13, and are ONLY 2 ½ behind Boston.

Give the Yankees credit, I never thought they would ever come back and surge like this…

Something that is plain obvious and I have said over and over, the Orioles sucking this year and in past seasons has turned killed attendance and HAS HURT a lot of businesses. Let’s forget that the team has problems on the field, a lot of people are staying away not only because of the performance, but the in-experience. There a lot of good people being hurt by the Orioles’ dismal play, and things need to improve sooner rather than later.

Orioles Lose to the Yankees, 8-5; The Losing Continues...

The New York Yankees, as we all know are dangerous and thanks to winning two out of three in Boston are within striking distance of the AL Lead.

Now they are only 3 ½ back of the Red Sox.

Last night, the Orioles rolled into the always intimidating confines of Yankee Stadium in the Bronx looking to capitalize on their successful series with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Sadly, last night it did not go so well as the Orioles lost, 8-5. Phil Hughes won, while Cabrera took the loss.

The bad Daniel showed up again, and the Yankees took advantage of him. Alas, there was surely not a repeat of his brilliant, one-hit, performance from last season.

Cabrera only lasted five innings and gave up six runs in the losing effort. The bullpen allowed two more runs after his exit. Doug Mientkiewicz and Bobby Abreu had two RBIs for the Yankees, and Jorge Posada had three hits.

Nick “the Stick” Markakis had three RBI’s and Aubrey Huff & Tike Redman drove in a run each.

The Orioles have lost their 85th game of the year, and they’ll try to win again tonight as well as on Wednesday.

Well, Jay Gibbons met with baseball officials today in New York City concerning his alleged use and receipt of performance enhancing drugs.

The Youngsters and the 'Pen Come Through: Orioles Defeat Blue Jays, 8-6

Not much has gone right for the Orioles in the past month; however, they were able to get a series win in Toronto. At this point of the season, the young guys are trying to make a name for themselves, and on Sunday, one won the game for the team.

On Sunday, Baltimore beat the Blue Jays, 8-6, in the 12th inning thanks to single by Scott Moore. Alas, the bullpen came up strong on Sunday, as the relief core kept the Orioles in the game and delivered perhaps one of their best performances of the past few months.

On top of the win, Nick Markakis, who is having a solid year, passed a couple of milestones. First, he hit his 20th home run and second, he drove in his 100th RBI, both tops on the team.

The Orioles take on the New York Yankees in the Bronx this week for a tough three game series.

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game, as does the Baltimore Examiner, Oriole Magic and the Orioles MLB site. Roch Kubatko has his thoughts on yesterday’s game.

Well, Orioles first base coach Sam Mejias will not be coming back to the organization and much of it may be due to the disarray of the team.

The Idiot File: O.J. Simpson

O.J, you are a dumb ass; therefore, as most know, crime doesn't pay. One would think after the first time, you'd keep your nose clean and stay on the down low -- permanently.

Too bad, the stupid old man doesn't know any better. Pathetic.

According to the AP, "Las Vegas police arrested O.J. Simpson on Sunday amid an investigation into an alleged armed robbery at a hotel in Las Vegas, a source close to the investigation said.

The charges he faces are unclear. However, Las Vegas Police Capt. James Dillon told The Associated Press that Simpson could face felony charges including robbery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery and burglary with a firearm."

The Weekend: O's Win on Friday, Lose on Saturday...

I am at RFK getting ready to cover the Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals for the DC Sports Box, but right now I am watching the New York Yankees take on the Boston Red Sox on FOX right now.

Granted, I have done a lot, and I mean a lot of moaning and bitching online and on various podcasts about the inordinate and excessive amount of coverage to when these two teams meet up; however, so far it has been great theater.

The Oriole had a great win last night; however, this afternoon it was a little more of what we all have been seeing this past month – bad pitching and lackluster baseball.

Buress looked great on Friday; however, Birkins was horrible today and might be exiled to the ‘pen.

They lost 8-3 to the Blue Jays up in Toronto.

Kurt Birkins gave up six runs in the first inning and didn’t get any outs; meanwhile, Victor Zambrano throws four excellent innings on his way back to the majors. Nick Markakis made a huge error which allowed two Jays to score in the seventh inning.

I’d expect to see him start a few times before the season is out.

Freddie Bynum looked good in the field, but otherwise, it seemed to be the same old, same old with this team.

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game, as does the Baltimore Examiner, Orioles MLB site, Washington Post, and Orioles Hangout.

Roch Kubatko has more opinions on today’s game and events of last night…

Well, even more bad news (um, it could be good news), Danys Baez may be out the rest of ’07 and perhaps longer due to a partial tear in his right shoulder.

There’s more on the Baez news from the orioles.com; alas, looking back, the decision to sign this guy may be one the Orioles remember for a long time and he might be grouped in with David Segui, Glenn Davis, Marty Cardova, & Omar Bell as some of the worst acquisitions made by the team – ever.

The Orioles have had a lot of oblique injuries…

In light of Miguel Tejada’s comments from the other day, he just wants to win and play. In his defense (ok, aside from his play on the field), he’s done his part at the plate, now the Orioles need to develop or surround him with the right talent.

O.J. Simpson; If He's Not A Murderer, He's a Loser...

O.J., after were found not guilty of not murdering Nicole Brown-Simpson and Ron Goldman, why did you just not go away? I mean, far away?

Well, one of the most infamous men right now in America, O.J. Simpson has once again found himself in hot water and in legal trouble.

According to CNN & the AP, "Investigators questioned O.J. Simpson and named him a suspect today in a confrontation at a casino hotel room involving sports memorabilia. The former football star acknowledged going to the room to get property he said was stolen from him but denied breaking in."

Oh joy.

From what I know, he really does not work and draws money from an NFL pension, plus other interests.

Dude, just go away.

Doing It The Right Way: O's Beat Angels, 3-0, The Rundown...

Pitching, defense, timely hitting & making the key plays are essential to the success of any baseball team. For the past month, the Orioles have more or less become a national joke because of how bad the team has performed. For the most part, they have not executed one or more these key elements during a game recently. However, last night, Baltimore played good baseball, one based in fundamentals and doing the little things right. More importantly, they won last night.

Instead a football score, or a score out of co-ed or beer league softball, the black and orange shutout the Angels, 3-0.

Call-up Jon Leicester pitched 5 2/3 pitches where he kept the Angels at bay, and the bullpen came in and lifted the Orioles to victory.

The funny thing is that the line-up sans Nick Markakis, Kevin Millar and Aubrey did not have any regulars in the lineup. There was no Miguel Tejada, or B-Rob, or Mora, or Ramon slotted to play. Some fans were upset from not seeing the regulars, and I was a little shocked to see the Miguel didn’t play; however, the numbers don’t lie — the Orioles have been terrible when those guys have been in the lineup.

In my honest opinion, this one of the best games they have played all year. Rather than seeing a team play uninspired baseball waiting for an October tee-time, it was about time to give the guys a shot who may never see major league playing for a long time, if ever again.

With a lineup full off career minor-leaguers, 4A players and guys who are looking for a shot, strong defense and fundamental play was norm on Thursday night rather than the same old song and dance.

Let’s just say Miggy was not happy being benched, as he opined: “They feel like they want to give me a day off. I don’t know if it’s a day off or I’m sitting on the bench,” he said. “Then I can go somewhere else next year, [if] they have somebody that can play short. That would be nice for me.”

Miggy, you’re a athlete and although you are the highest paid one the team, you don’t determine the lineup each day.

The O’s are 20 games under .500 and a stone’s throw away from the bottom.

The manager decides who plays, thus suck it up. It’s not like everyone was performing with you in the lineup.

Maybe seeing a bunch multi-millionaires sitting on the bench will wake everyone up and send a strong message.

***

To make matters worse for the Birds, both Daniel Cabrera and Dave Trembley have been suspended by MLB for their infractions. Well, Trembley will be out three games for his role in an on-field argument Wednesday night, and Cabrera will sit out a six for his infamous bench clearing near-brawl and completely losing his temper last Friday.

I don't think Trembley should have been suspended for three games; however, you'll pay if you ever show up an umpire, and Cabrera, the suspension is just about right. He'll miss a start, but he was so wrong in the case that it is not even funny.

The Orioles MLB has more on the development.

The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Examiner, Washington Post and Orioles Hangout have a recap from last night.

Roch Kubatko has his news and thoughts from Oriole-land in his blog, and Bill Ordine has his take from last night.

Like I mentioned above, most of the regulars were not in the lineup on Thursday and that had a few fans concerned and little miffed. At this point, this month is about evaluation and testing out the young guys, not so much winning the games. Well, the team having been so bad closing out season that you might as well light a fire under their a**es.

Dave Trembley's blowup was classic, and Childs Walker of the Sun compares him to the masters, Weaver, Piniella, et. al...

The Baltimore Examiner has a-not-so-flattering piece on the top class action lawyers in America, and Peter Angelos appears on the list...

The Idiot File: The Bank of America - Screw Them

The Bank of America can kiss my arse and I'll damned if I ever withdraw money from one of their ATM machines ever again.

According to AOL, the Bank of America has raised the amount it charges non-customers to withdraw cash from most of its ATMs from $2 to $3.

This may be a baseball blog, but this stuff is out of line. Making money is great, but robbing customers is another issue.

Sheesh.

This and That: Alyssa Milano: Baseballer and Part of the "Hot Corner"...

We all know her from her days from "Who's the Boss" and "Charmed", but Alyssa Milano is part of the "dark side" (jokingly, the world of blogging) and now her love of baseball has gone from the information super highway to the small screen.

She's gotten to know a few players and date them; however, she's a fan - a huge fan.

And she knows her sh*t..

For those who want to see more of her, there's some awesome news...

"It was announced Thursday that Milano is joining new Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn as a member of the crew at the brand-new "TBS Hot Corner" on MLB.com as an online personality starting Monday. It is the latest demonstration of Milano's unquestioned love for baseball -- already evident in the successful sales of her TOUCH by Alyssa Milano line of women's ballpark apparel and the nearly 400,000 unique visits this season to what Entertainment Weekly called one of the best "celebrity blogs" on the Internet."

Alyssa, congrats on the new job and hope you do well...

Chat it up with her and see what she has to say about the sport we all love, via her blog, Touch 'Em All...

Dave Trembley, Shades of Earl Weaver; Photos Along With Pictures Of His Ejection & Performance...

I have been trying to find this video all night, and my mission is accomplished.

Here's video of Dave Trembley being ejected from Wednesday night's ball game.

The best part of Wednesday night was seeing Dave Trembley ejected. He was not happy over a completely botched call by umpire Paul Emml where Scott Moore was called out at second base off a Jay Payton ground out.

However, Howie Kendrick was not on the bag - he was in a completely different time zone.

Alas, Trembley put on a great performance for those in attendance. He must have telepathically tapped into the head of Earl Weaver, Billy Martin or Lou Piniella because in his tantrum he not only drew a line where Kendrick stood and then HE THREW the umpire out due to this utter incompetence.

Awesome!

Thanks to jenner8675309 for the video!

This and That: Bill Belichick Pulling the Wool Over Our Eyes?

For many years, the New England Patriots have the been darlings of the media and the NFL.

Now things may not be what they seem.

Long story short: "NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the Patriots violated league rules by videotaping defensive signals from Jets coaches in the teams' regular-season opener. Goodell fined coach Bill Belichick Thursday and the team a total of $750,000. The team also has been told to forfeit draft choices." (ESPN)

Yikes. Maybe he's not a genius after all? So much for the legacy, eh?

Does he come off as arrogant and holier than thou, or is it just me?

Helping An O's Blogger Out...

Would anyone happen to have gone to ESPN Zone event with Jamie Walker on Thursday?

I wanted to go; however, my job required me to work in Virginia this week and I could not escape it. If you did see the event or take pictures, shoot me an email at mdguy2415@aol.com

This & That: Dr. Dre's New Look...

Being that my job sucks at the moment, I decided to fart around on MTV.com and catch some of the MTV Video Music Award Coverage.

Remember back in the day, Dr. Dre was the big thing and pontificated about the wonders of marijuana and partying? I used to remember him look fairly frumpy and out of shape, more or less like the average (just that he's far more wealthy).

Now, Dr. Dre is buff. I mean, not in shape, but it looks like he's been lifting like crazy and looks like a football player or bodybuilder.

Good for him, and even I was shocked by the way he looked.

Considering the whole drug thing in sports, maybe he's suspected of it, HGH, etc.

No matter what, good for him and he being disciplined enough to get himself in shape and achieve that look.

Welcome to the Bottom: Orioles Lose to the Angels 18-6, the Rundown

I went to the Angels/Orioles game last night, and usually out of support I stay the duration of match-up.

However, on Thursday night, I left early. Being the Orioles were down 11-5 and I honestly had better things to do last night, like get up for work on time and refreshed in the morning, I gave up.

Good thing I did. It only worse thereafter.

In the end, life goes on and Baltimore lost to Anaheim, this time with yet another football score, 18-6.

The best part of last night was seeing Dave Trembley ejected.

Great theater.

Now, the bad. There was a lot of it.

Daniel Cabrera was tagged for 10 runs, 8 of them earned. The bullpen did not do much better, in fact, sucked even more. He's lost his 16th game in a row.

Errors, walks and just down right bad play did the team in. The Angels took advantage of the Orioles poor play and beat the heck of them.

Garrett Anderson hit a homer and drove in five runs, and Vladmir Guerrero drove in four RBIs.

The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Examiner, Washington Post, Orioles Hangout & Oriole Magic!

Bob Cohn of the Washington Times has an article on the the state of the Baltimore Orioles & Dave Trembley, which is obviously not good.

Rock Kubtako has his thoughts on last night, as well as Nick Markakis and the state of the team.

Peter Schmuck opines that the Orioles free fall into oblivion this season has exposed a lot of problems that the team needs to fix.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Guthrie still wants to pitch this season and he's itching to come back into the fold.

More of the Same: O's Lose to the Angels, 10-5

For the Orioles, it was more of the same last night – another loss.

The Angels beat them 10-5, thanks to two monster home runs by Vladmir Guerrero’s two homers and the contributions of pretty much every Angel, as each batter got at least once hit.

With a thin starting rotation, Baltimore inserted another guy into the fold – Victor Santos.

Well, it’s not like he did any better than anyone else the team has trotted out there as of late.

He allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings and naturally, the bullpen did not do any better as they coughed up 5 more runs.

Kevin Millar homered; however, the Oriole got whipped again.

This is their 17th defeat in 20 games and makes me wonder does anyone on this team care anymore? Besides Markakis’s solid numbers and Brian Roberts playing through injuries, what else is there to see?

Last night we reached a milestone; albeit, a sad one – the tenth straight losing season.

***

The Baltimore Examiner got an interview with Peter Angelos and got his thoughts on Jay Gibbons. He opined that everyone is innocent until proven guilty and Gibbons has not been tested positive for anything. However, he did not say much on other topics, such as the losing with the team.

The Oriole players, staff, manager and front office are naturally not talking about the whole PED issue with Jay Gibbons. I’m sure the players must feel a little disturbed and weary of it all, but for now, the public will not hear much from the team on the Gibbons story as advised through Orioles’ media director, Bill Stetka.

Are the Orioles cursed? Kevin Cowherd of the Sun and many believe so…

The Baltimore Sun has a recap of the game as does the Baltimore Examiner, Washington Post, & Orioles Hangout.

Roch Kubtako looks at the Orioles as they are now, and a few more tidbits about the team.
